Governance

Why is a Human Rights and Equalities First Approach relevant to the governance of your organisation, and how would you implement it?

Governance is concerned with the top-level decision-making structures of an organisation. Trustees and board members are responsible for providing organisations with their strategic direction as well as maintaining their integrity and legal compliance. This could include establishing the organisation’s mission, measuring impact, and deciding on how best to use resources.

As such, trustees and board members can greatly impact how closely an organisation follows a human rights and equalities first approach.

Our Governance courses and resources can support boards and committees to embed a Human Rights and Equalities First approach into their work.

Building lived experience into decision-making (case study)

We’ve worked with Neighbourhood Networks to develop a resource on incorporating meaningful participation into board governance, focused on the role of lived experience in decision-making. This resource covers:

  • Why third sector organisations may want to include lived experience in decision-making
  • How to build lived experience into your governance structures
  • How Neighbourhood Networks developed their advisory group

Download the full case study below.

You can also watch a recorded presentation from Emma Murray, Network Manager for Neighbourhood Networks, in which she shared how Neighbourhood Networks evaluated their existing lived experience pathways and developed an advisory group for their members.

Governance – a human rights and equalities first approach

This half day course is an introduction to what a human rights and equalities approach means for third sector boards and committees.

It’s for people who have a say, or give advice and support, on how boards or committees are run: trustees, board or committee members, managers, capacity building officers etc. – and will provide you with the tools you need to integrate human rights and equalities into the work of boards and committees.
